Word Storm online

One letter, one minute, and everyone writes as many words as they can at once. Here you play it online, a judge checks the words and counts the points.

Play Word Storm
  • Free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  • On a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing to install.
  • With friends and family through a link, wherever they are.
  • When nobody else is around, bots with character and a voice join you.

What is Word Storm

Each round a letter is drawn and everyone writes nouns that start with it. Words count in their basic form, names of people and places do not. A long word nobody else wrote scores the most, a word several players wrote the least. The judge checks the words against dictionaries, and when it is not sure, the people at the table vote.

How to start

  1. Tap the Play button above and type your name. One word is enough, no sign-up needed.

  2. You sit down at a table where someone is waiting, or at a new one that starts by itself in a moment. Bots take the free seats.

  3. Want to play with family or friends? Open your own table and send them the link. At the table you can also chat and send reactions.

Word Storm rules

Goal

Write as many nouns as you can that start with the round’s letter. Whoever has the most points after the last round wins. Equal points share a place, and nobody is the loser.

Rounds

The game has 5 rounds. Each draws a new letter and gives you 60 seconds to write. Everyone writes at once, word after word, 20 words at most. You can delete a word until the round ends. Once everyone at the table is done, the round ends early. Bots finish at their own pace.

Which words count

Only nouns in their basic form count: “dog”, not “dogs”. A word needs at least 3 letters and has to start with the round’s letter. Names of people, places and brands do not count. The same word counts for you only once.

Similar words

A word and a word made from it, such as “lion” and “lioness” or “pig” and “piglet”, are two different words. The table’s host can have them count as one.

Stop

Whoever has written 10 words or more can press Stop. Everyone else then has 3 more seconds to finish. Only when the table’s host turns it on.

The judge

A judge checks the words against dictionaries. Others never see a rude word, and it does not count. Dialect and slang words count.

Challenges

After the reveal you can challenge someone else’s word, and the people at the table vote on it. There are 45 seconds to read and vote. On a tie, the judge decides.

Points

A valid word nobody else wrote scores 10 points. When someone else wrote it too, each of you scores 5. A long word of 7 letters or more that nobody else wrote scores 15. An invalid word scores 0.

Slovak and Czech

A word counts in Slovak or in Czech. Only letters both alphabets have are drawn.

Leaving and bots

If you leave the game, a bot writes for you. Nobody writes for a player who lost the connection, and what they did not write scores 0.

Questions and answers

How many players can play?

Two to eight. Bots can take the free seats; they write everyday words like people and now and then get one wrong.

Which words count?

Nouns in their basic form, such as “dog”, “table” or “freedom”. Names of people, places and brands, verbs and other forms of a word, such as “dogs”, do not count.

Who decides whether a word counts?

The judge, by the dictionaries. When it is not sure, or someone disagrees, the people at the table vote. On a tie the judge’s word stands.

Which languages can I play in?

English, Slovak or Czech. At a Slovak or Czech table a word counts in either language.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no ads and no sign-up. Just type a name and play.
